Alcohol Units & Risk Level Calculator

Calculate your Alcohol Units & Check Risk Level

Understanding how many units of alcohol you drink in a typical week can help you see whether your drinking is within the UK low-risk guidelines. This checker uses NHS guidance to estimate your weekly alcohol units and show which risk level you fall into, from within guideline levels to higher-risk drinking.

Alcohol units are a simple way of measuring the amount of pure alcohol you drink. Looking at your total weekly units can help you think about your drinking habits and whether it might be helpful to cut down or seek support.

This tool is designed as a guide only. It can be a useful starting point for understanding your drinking, but it does not replace personalised medical advice. If you are worried about your drinking or finding it hard to cut down, please speak to a GP, nurse or alcohol support service.

How to use the calculator:

  1. Click “Add drink”.
  2. Choose the type of drink (for example, pint of beer, glass of wine, spirits or custom drink).
  3. Check the strength (% ABV) and volume (you can use the suggested values or edit them if needed).
  4. Enter how many of that drink you have in a typical week, then click “Add drink to list”.
  5. Repeat these steps for each different type of drink you usually have in a week.
  6. When you have finished adding drinks, click “Calculate units & risk” to see your total weekly units and risk level on the chart.
  7. Use this information to reflect on your alcohol use. If you have any concerns or would like advice or support, please speak to a GP, nurse or other health professional.
